We usually write to find out what it is we want to say, not to say what we want, and find the truth somewhere in the middle of that struggle between self-delusion and desire for integrity.

Barbra Streisand Because I Love Her

I love Glee and I’m excited about its return after the summer.  But here’s the thing I can’t stand—I can’t stand when the producers or directors talk about how Lea Michelle is the next Barbra Streisand.  She’s not.  She has a beautiful voice and very good acting talent, but her voice is flatter than Barbra’s and her acting isn’t as convincing as Barbra’s and her comedic timing doesn’t even come close to Barbra’s.  I would love to see a young talent who really is the next Barbra, but these days I think it’d be impossible.  People with talent these days are too self-aware.  I can’t imagine anyone singing “I’m the Greatest Star” with the self-deprecating humor Barbra injects into it.  I can only imagine someone, convinced that they are the greatest star, singing about being the greatest star with no humor at all.  Barbra Streisand is in her own class.
